Sarcoidosis is an inflammatory condition in which tiny clusters of inflammatory cells, called granulomas, form in one or more organs of the body. It most often affects the lungs and the lymph nodes in the chest, but because it can appear almost anywhere, it is described as a multi-system condition — the skin, eyes, heart, liver, and other organs may also be involved. Sarcoidosis is considered uncommon rather than rare, and it can affect adults of any background, though it is diagnosed somewhat more frequently in adults between roughly 20 and 60 years of age. For many people it is mild, and in a meaningful share of cases it quiets down or resolves on its own over months to a few years.

When sarcoidosis does cause symptoms, they vary widely depending on which organs are involved. Common ones include a persistent dry cough, shortness of breath, fatigue, low-grade fever, swollen lymph nodes, skin changes, or eye irritation. The exact cause is not fully understood; the leading view is that the immune system overreacts to some trigger — possibly an environmental or infectious exposure — in a person with a genetic predisposition. It is not contagious. Because the signs overlap with many other conditions, evaluation usually combines a physical exam, chest imaging, blood tests, breathing (pulmonary function) tests, and sometimes a small tissue biopsy to confirm the characteristic granulomas.
