What Conditions Can a Whole Body Scan Detect?

When it comes to your health, early detection could mean the difference between living and surviving.

A full-body scan offers a powerful, non-invasive way to find out what’s happening inside your body and identify potential health concerns before symptoms even appear.

From spotting hidden cancers to uncovering cardiovascular issues and neurological conditions, this advanced imaging technology provides valuable insights into your health that an annual check-up may miss.

Follow along as we explore the wide range of conditions a whole-body MRI scan can detect and how leveraging this new healthcare technology could be a key step in safeguarding your long-term wellness.

What is a Whole-Body Scan? Uncovering the History

A whole body MRI scan, as we know it today, is a non-invasive test that scans and produces detailed images of the body’s internal structure.

Utilizing a combination of radio waves and a powerful magnetic field, it creates images of your soft tissues, organs, bones, joints, and blood vessels that a radiologist examines to search for any abnormalities present in your body.

Despite its recent entrance into the world of healthcare and wellness, the technology itself dates back to the late 1960s.

The Arrival of MRI Technology

In 1969, Dr. Raymond Damadian took the first step in the scientific method – he posed a question.

Could magnetic resonance be used to tell the difference between cancer and non-cancerous cells?

He found success by testing his hypothesis on rats. He discovered that different tissue emissions resulted in different response lengths – the longer the response signals, the more likely they were from cancerous tissue.

As Damadian continued to develop and hone his findings, the first patent for MRI technology was filed in 1972. Two years later, the first full-body MRI machine was built, eventually leading to the first commercially available MRI scanner in 1980.

Should You Get a Whole-Body Scan?

With a full-body MRI scan, our goal is to provide a proactive approach to healthcare, offering the option for individuals with a genetic predisposition to certain conditions or those who present a higher risk to have the best chance at early detection.

In addition to high-risk individuals with a family history of certain health conditions, you should consider scheduling a whole-body MRI if you meet one or more of the following criteria:

  • You are overweight
  • You are sedentary or live an inactive lifestyle
  • You are over the age of 45
  • You have high cholesterol, diabetes, or high blood pressure
